Budget Hotel in Amsterdam

Posted on 06:43 by gaurav kumar
If you're the worst hotel in Amsterdam, it's good to foster low expectations. With this hilarious (real) advertising campaign, at least visitors know what they're getting into. (By Anthony Burrill.)

I'm feeling dreamy today. Wouldn't you like to lie on the grass and let your thoughts wander?

Portraits

Posted on 07:02 by gaurav kumar
Every now and again, I go through obsessive periods about certain types of art. Right now, my love is the portrait. Don't you think portraits add such a warm, personal touch to a room? Even Will and Grace's apartment had that gorgeous portrait by the fireplace!

So where do you find a portrait for your home? I guess an antique shop, or you could buy directly from an artist. In Rob and Susan's new apartment, a watercolor painting by Kim McCarty hangs above their dining table. McCarty seeks to capture "longing and loss," and I think her soft colors and searching gazes do this beautifully.

Yawns are contagious.

Posted on 07:00 by gaurav kumar
Uh oh. We're screwed!

Also, this dude below is totally awesome. He goes around the world, puts the self-timer on two seconds and tries to run as far away from the camera as he can.
I guess another thing my blog has taught me is that I like photos of real people doing real things.

I have a secret!

Posted on 06:49 by gaurav kumar
I have big news that I can't wait to share with you, but I am not allowed to saying anything yet. I'm such a gossip that it's very hard for me to keep secrets! Bwah.

Hello, Blog, Nice to Meet Me

Posted on 07:09 by gaurav kumar
Writing a blog over the past year has helped me define my taste in very specific ways. Has it been the same for you, readers-with-blogs? It's funny because I thought I knew, generally, what I liked, but I've gotten much pickier after having a blog, and I've also noticed trends throughout my posts that open my eyes to surprising things.

For example, because of my blog, I've realized that I return over and over to....
-- white walls
-- ocean and sealife
-- landscape photography
-- balloon photos
-- wooden pieces
-- solid-colored short dresses
-- weird jeans
-- short shorts
-- off-beat necklines
-- being Alex's girlfriend

Readers-with-blogs, what has your blog helped you realize you're drawn to?

Prospect Park

Posted on 08:47 by gaurav kumar
Gasp! Don't you love today's photograph in Jen Bekman's online shop 20x200? It's a winter scene in Prospect Park by Joseph O. Holmes. It reminds me of childhood walks through the English countryside and bundling up during Michigan winters....Doesn't it make your nose cold and cheeks flushed just looking at it?

I think I'm going to buy it! It's one of those prints that I'd love looking at every day. Now, the question is, should I get the smaller print for $20 or the larger for $200? It's a big price difference, but larger prints are more beautiful and evocative. What do you think, dear readers?

Maps of New York

Posted on 10:30 by gaurav kumar
The New Museum reopens on December 1st. In the meantime, check out Get Lost, the museum's collection of maps of downtown New York drawn by artists around the world. Above is a spooky one by Marcel Dzama, in which he imagines fictional folklore, such as "the hanging tree of Washington Square Park." Terence Koh's guide to having sex in public and Chris Johanson's hate letter to New York are worth a look, too. (via Vic)

Bear Love

Posted on 05:42 by gaurav kumar
What sweet photos of bears by Jill Greenberg, who set up a huge outdoor studio in Calgary. She really seems to capture their moods and personalities. Her bear show will be exhibited at ClampArt until the end of November. P.S. Has anyone ever seen a bear in the wild? My family did while hiking in Yellowstone, but luckily we escaped unscathed.

P.S. Greenberg, a master of capturing emotion, is also lauded for her hilariously named monkey portraits and her heartbreaking photos of children crying.

Stina Persson

Posted on 04:35 by gaurav kumar
I heart Stockholm-based Stina Persson's illustrations. Her new website launched today, so check out her dreamy illustrations of women. They have a great feel and an inexplicable authenticity. (Plus, look at that cute bellybutton above!) For more, see her art for Cookie's witty sex column, or check out this lovely art boutique.

Jen Bekman's 20x200

Posted on 05:43 by gaurav kumar
New York gallerist Jen Bekman is revolutionizing the art world. This month, she launched the online art shop 20x200, where she sells new prints every week in editions of 200 for ONLY $20. That is insanely inexpensive. She's opening up the art world for everyone. Awesome, Jen! (This week's photo, above, is by Karolina Karlic. Isn't it pretty?)

I miss Paris.

Ahh, I miss Paris. I had an epically stressful day yesterday and would love to hop on a flight and spend the week walking through the Luxembourg Gardens and through the Rodin, Louvre and Picasso museums.

The weather feels like fall today.

Posted on 05:09 by gaurav kumar
On Sunday, Alex and I rented a convertible mini (teeny!) and went to the beach to celebrate the last day of summer. It was really cool and windy, and we rode bikes and ate pizza. The only sad part was that I got sunscreen in my eye for three hours and felt like a five year old. But overall, it was a great day. Welcome to fall, everybody!
