Blah blah blah.

Alex and I hosted a cocktail party last night, which was great, but now I have a huge headache at work today. (Tauba Auerback understands.)Friday, 27 July 2007

Paint by Numbers

I just wrote about this poster for Cookie. It's meant for babes, but I secretly think it would look nice on a grown-up mantle...Monday, 9 July 2007

Journal
Posted on 07:15 by gaurav kumar
Two winters ago, when I was feeling unexpectedly sad, I went to therapy for a couple months. My psychologist told me to keep a journal, and it was AMAZING how it can help you have surprising, helpful realizations. I'd highly recommend it for soul-searchers out there, especially if you're going through a weird time.Or you could just make pretty drawings, either way!

My, what beautiful wine you have...
Posted on 05:44 by gaurav kumar
We've long been drawn to well designed wine bottles here on Cup of Jo. But the other night at Little Giant, I was blown away by the label of the wine they were pouring by the glass -- Mano a Mano from Spain. So graphic and striking! It added a really nice touch to the evening. Here are a few other beauties...

So Good, So Good
Posted on 06:42 by gaurav kumar
I'm a huge fan of typographic prints, and I'm a hopeless romantic. Put them together and what have you got? This amazing poster. (Look how cool it looks in a house.) I would buy one immediately, but alas they're sold out. Anyone think they could make one??Sunday, 25 March 2007
Typography Week Grand Finale: Nick Feltron!
Posted on 07:33 by gaurav kumar
To end typography week on a high note, I bring you Nick Feltron, typographic genius. I think my friend Kenan especially would enjoy his 2006 Annual Report, in which Feltron catalogs what he ate, drank, saw and enjoyed during the past year. Also, if you want to read more about type, check out these two blogs: Ace Jet 170 and Black White Bliss. Thanks for reading, and I hope you enjoyed typography week! Now onto the next theme....

House Numbers
Posted on 07:23 by gaurav kumar
When my roommate and I have parties, our guests often accidentally knock on the apartment door below ours. That's because we are technically "Apartment #2" but we are on the 3rd floor. Our downstairs neighbors' raving lunacy just adds to the confusion.Needless to say, we need a house number. I was shopping around and everything I saw seemed either boring or dated. But then I stumbled upon these numbers at Design Within Reach. (Thanks, Mom!) They will do the trick....and now we can have parties again.
Keep Calm

Originally a British World War II poster, this print is a great reminder that it's sometimes best to keep your upper lip stiff and just get on with it. It would be great to hang in a crazy, chaotic office like ours. You can get one here and sometimes here.(Photo by Pensive Volcano, via SF Girl By Bay)

Color Letters
Posted on 05:35 by gaurav kumar
NYC-base design firm Art Department makes whimsical objects out of clay, such as these letters, which would be cool in place of house numbers (you could spell out "two," for example). They also make a beautiful mobile (inspired by their swimming under a waterfall in the Caribbean), which I thought Lucy would appreciate. (She has been known to like mobiles.) Enjoy!Wednesday, 21 March 2007
Love Hate Shirt
Posted on 05:20 by gaurav kumar
Did you know that Leonardo da Vinci wrote backwards? To read his writing, people would hold his notebooks up to mirrors. He would have loved this shirt. It says "hate" when you're wearing it in person, but "love" in the mirror. Especially good for unrequited lovers or shy people who have trouble showing affection.Tuesday, 20 March 2007
Helvetica
Posted on 05:19 by gaurav kumar
My friends and I have gotten really into documentaries lately. Currently topping the list (and fitting in beautifully with typography week) is Helvetica, a new documentary about the life of a typeface (which celebrates its 50th birthday this year) and, more generally, how type affects our lives. It's amazing how much typography can change the look and feel of a magazine article or restaurant menu or book cover or company logo. The film will be especially interesting since it talks to designers about how they make certain type choices. So cool to hear their reasoning.
Sadly, the New York premiere on April 6th is already sold out. (Can anyone score tix? I will be your best friend and movie partner.) It's also screening at Yale on April 19th.
