Some of my family lives in America; but most live in England. My family in England just spent an amazing weekend together in Polruan, the tiny Cornish fishing village where my grandmother lives. My aunt sent the photos today, and they made my heart swell and break at the same time. Looks so lovely -- I wish we all could have been there! It's hard to live so far away from your family sometimes.

I've been tagged twice – once by Orange Beautiful and once by Ma Vie en Rose. (Thanks!) The rules of tagging are that I have to reveal eight personal things and tag eight other people ...Here are my eight things:
• I am obsessed with chocolate chip cookies. If there is one in front of me, I literally cannot not eat it. I always imagined having a cake-shaped stack of cookies instead of a wedding cake.
• I am claustrophobic and scared of elevators and subways. I really feel like I'm going to get stuck in them forever. I know the fear is irrational, but I still want people to hold my hand in elevators.
• I sleep with earplugs and a mask and a kitten.
• I was born in Paris and lived in England when I was little. I can fake a British accent, although not on command.
• I am a terrible dancer. I just don't know how to move! I stand very awkwardly on dance floors. My friend Andrea once taught me at a bar with a mirror (she was so nice!) but I have since forgotten.
• If I could marry any fictional character, I would marry Mike Myers in So I Married an Ax-Murderer.
• Red wine makes me crabby and sad. I think I might be allergic to tannins or something. Whenever I'd reach for a glass, Josh would warn me, "Ends in tears, J. Ends in tears."
• For years growing up, I believed in Peter Pan. I made my parents call me "Wendy" when they kissed me good night, in case Peter was listening on the windowsill. I also made my sister Lucy wear a blue-and-white striped nightshirt so she'd look like Wendy's brother John. (Thanks, Luce!)

This week of posts is dedicated to my little brother, Nick, who turns 25 today! He has a quirky sense of humor and a great appreciation of the way things work. He especially enjoys watches, biking, environmental friendliness, traveling, European style and cool ladies.This week, we will get inside Nick's head and see what it's like to be him. I will choose photography and design that I think he'd like. Nick can let me know how well I do, and Sarah Wilson will hopefully weigh in, too, since she often knows Nick better than he knows himself.

I love this monkey! Designed in Denmark in 1951, he became a mascot on nature programs and a prize on quiz shows. My friend Lee, from Denmark, told me, "Yes, I know that monkey and like him very much. The designer Kay Bojesen was very popular when my grandparents were young; my favorite toy of his is the puffin. Our dad came to visit two weekends ago. We walked across the Brooklyn Bridge, sailed at night and ate ice-cream sandwiches the size of our heads. The photo above was taken in Dumbo--the wall looked like the kind of place a band would take press photos, so we took some "band" shots. The photo below shows Alex being sweet after sailing. My uncle Hamish (here, with his wife Hal) lives in a little town in England. Here's his hilarious report of a recent ebay transaction....Wrote Hamish:
"I bought a horribly garish key ring for my bike a week ago, paid for it immediately and received nothing, so I sent a note saying that if it didn’t arrive pretty soon, negative feedback would be on the way. Check out the guy’s response...'Dont worry about the bad feed back its on its way and i emailed you saying postman eva robbed it or your trying it on. My wife has resent you one and it will be the last one as this time i have proof off postage get what i mean. so eva you carnt robb me again or the postman carnt'"

It's my dad's birthday today! One awesome thing about our dad is his hilarious way of nicknaming everyone (and everything) around him. For example, I am Fofans. Lucy is Poohey. Nick is Tiny, Bunny, Tiny-Tutak-the-Famous-Eskimo-Hunter, Nikolaev-the-Famous-Russian-Choreographer and Bundley-Joe-Cool-Rad-Dude-Nick. My dad even calls his favorite fleece "Reddie." I love his nicknames (or should I say code names?) and slang; he always makes us laugh. He also loves to travel out west, grows his own tomatoes and has an amazing answering machine message. We love you, Daddy!
Oh my god, these photographs are heartbreaking. In her political series "End Times," Jill Greenberg seeks to portray children's faces in a future, disastrous 'present day.' I love the photos' emotion and richness, but it's upsetting to think about the babies being made to cry. In fact, there was big controversy surrounding the exhibition last summer--people questioned Greenberg's ethics and even accused her of child abuse.But her gallery quickly explained that the photographs were digitally manipulated (meaning, the babies never actually cried like that) and released a VERY interesting essay Regarding What is Real in Photography. They say that perhaps Greenberg got such a strong response because she is TOO good at what she does; and that people instinctually believe everything they see in a photograph, whereas they're able to see film, paintings and other media as imaginative constructs. I'd recommend reading the thoughtful essay if you have a second. And, with that, my readers, thank you for reading family week. I hope you enjoyed it! Now onto the next....

My new brother-in-law Paul turns thirty this weekend, which is very fitting for family week (thanks, Paul!). To celebrate his old age, we went to the Drambuie Den on 14th Street, where we drank tons and then lit the drinks on fire.
Paul makes Lucy laugh a lot. Sometimes she laughs until she cries!
Ryan lights up the Drambuie, just the way Paul taught him.
Every time I hang out with Paul and Lucy a drink is somehow spilled on my foot.
Robin and Paul heart each other.
Last September, Paul also married my sister.I love you, Paul! I am so happy you are in our family!
Despite my obvious love for all things baby, I've never been the type of girl who daydreams about her future wedding. It's always seemed so far off. But if I did dream, I'd think along the lines of the gorgeous wedding of designer Lena Corwin. I love that she used fabric for the portrait backgrounds, and the outdoor dinner looks like so much fun. She also made her groom's tie!

A reader in Germany gave me a tip about the painter Gerd Brunzema, who paints his children while they're sleeping. My reader says: "Very strange. It isn't cute at all. But I like it, cause it looks authentic." I find the series really sweet, though. (What do you think, readers: Creepy or cute?) Either way, they're wonderful.
