I think my biological clock just started ticking. Seriously. I'm 28 years old, and I have suddenly and inexplicably starting fantasizing, obsessing and even dreaming about babies.I've started reading memoirs about nannies and motherhood and blogs written by moms. Every baby I pass on the street is cuter than the last; I coo and wave into their strollers. I think about babies all the time, as well as baby names: Oliver, Sasha, Sophie, Zoe (with an umlaut).
Has this happened to any of you?!

This weekend, my grandmother came to the United States for the first time in almost twenty years! We used to visit her in Cornwall every summer, but she crossed the pond this time. We are so excited to have her here. Inspired, I brought a bit of the Brits to Cookie Magazine by featuring this sweet little cottage and the little dude who lives there. So cute! Makes me miss England and crave Dairy Milk.

Hope you had a lovely weekend! Apart from picnics and a ridiculously delicious dinner at Perry St., I spent time writing for Cookie's Nesting blog, which I'm so excited about. Here are the posts I've written so far...1. Three iconic chairs that come in kid sizes.

Anyone who knows me will tell you that two of the things I love most in this world are cookies and babies.So I was thrilled when, a couple weeks ago, I was approached by Cookie Magazine to write for their website. For those who don't yet know, Cookie is an amazing magazine for young stylish moms. It has great illustrations, inspiring decor pieces, smart articles and a very funny sex column. I am so excited to be (at least a small) part of their team.

Oh my god, these photographs are heartbreaking. In her political series "End Times," Jill Greenberg seeks to portray children's faces in a future, disastrous 'present day.' I love the photos' emotion and richness, but it's upsetting to think about the babies being made to cry. In fact, there was big controversy surrounding the exhibition last summer--people questioned Greenberg's ethics and even accused her of child abuse.But her gallery quickly explained that the photographs were digitally manipulated (meaning, the babies never actually cried like that) and released a VERY interesting essay Regarding What is Real in Photography. They say that perhaps Greenberg got such a strong response because she is TOO good at what she does; and that people instinctually believe everything they see in a photograph, whereas they're able to see film, paintings and other media as imaginative constructs. I'd recommend reading the thoughtful essay if you have a second. And, with that, my readers, thank you for reading family week. I hope you enjoyed it! Now onto the next....

A reader in Germany gave me a tip about the painter Gerd Brunzema, who paints his children while they're sleeping. My reader says: "Very strange. It isn't cute at all. But I like it, cause it looks authentic." I find the series really sweet, though. (What do you think, readers: Creepy or cute?) Either way, they're wonderful.

No family week would be complete without a post about the Saturday Evening Post. So check out this incredible "silent" comic strip cover by Thornton Utz--it shows a day in the life of an awesome 1950's surburban dad. Illustrators usually have to do a single illustration for a magazine cover (think The New Yorker) -- here, Utz had to do nine! Bravo.

Kristen Oppenheim is exactly the kind of artist you hope to discover in the middle of a family week; I was thrilled to come across her work yesterday on I Heart Photograph. Oppenheim has an evocative range of photographs about childhood. Above is "The Treasure" and below is "The Leap," which are so sweetly realistic! (I remember making my parents watch endless "leaps"--I could almost do a split!)

I love Patrick Smith's atmospheric photography. This photograph was taken at Val Thorens, the highest ski resort in France, where my family was lucky enough to ski when we were growing up. Our ski-school teacher Dominique was sometimes mean and sometimes nice, and my sister won an Asterix comic in a race. My mom said that on especially cold days, you could hear the little ski-school children weeping as they skiied past. So sad!Tuesday, 27 March 2007
