The Cup-of-Jo Holiday Gift Guide

Posted on 07:00 by gaurav kumar
I wasn't going to do a gift guide this year because everyone I'm buying presents for also reads my blog. But when one of my favorite readers requested gift ideas, how could I say no? She is just too cute.

Here's a tip: When brainstorming presents for someone, I first make a list of his or her favorite things--traveling, biking, a new house, a new job, whatever. Once you've chosen a category, it's easier to think of specific gifts. Also, I'm a huge fan of pooling money--you can buy a much cooler present for your dad if your siblings contribute, too.

Ok, here we go! (I'll do a post or two each day...)

Travel Party

Posted on 09:15 by gaurav kumar
Last weekend, my friend Jason had a party where everyone had to wear an accessory from a favorite holiday. Of course, Alex and I chose Berlin. We wore all black, and, in an uncharacteristically crafty moment, I made us pins of the East Berlin traffic light men. I must say, I was pretty proud of them!

Botanical bathroom.

Posted on 07:45 by gaurav kumar
My friends Susan and Rob had a brunch this Sunday to celebrate both Rob's birthday and their new apartment. Sadly, I forgot my camera, but, along with a scattering of Eames chairs and gorgeous wooden table, they had some surprising touches, such as two framed posters of the Prada Waist Down exhibit (Susan is a fashion editor), an immense collection of art/typography books (Rob is a graphic designer), a series of homemade Rorschach inkblot tests and, cutest of all, a framed receipt of coffee they had in Paris on their first New Year's Eve together.

Anyway, Alex and I were inspired by their creativity and well-edited aesthetic, and I was propelled to look through old decor photos yesterday. I found this image of genius bathroom decoupage. I love love love it, but I have no idea where I first saw it. (Anyone know?) Many people kind of ignore their bathroom walls, but wouldn't it be such a surprise to open the door and see all these beautiful prints?

Cookies

Posted on 06:29 by gaurav kumar
Alex and I were watching The Great Escape yesterday when, about half way through, we both got a craving for cookies. But neither of us wanted to leave the cozy apartment. Suddenly, I remembered this awesome cookie delivery service! Thirty minutes later, we were sitting on my bed, watching Steve McQueen ride his motorcycle and munching warm peanut butter and chocolate chip cookies. It was one of those I-heart-New-York moments.

Blog Crush: Smosch.

Posted on 13:26 by gaurav kumar
Do you ever develop blog crushes? Like, when you're reading someone's blog and suddenly realize they're this awesome genius and you can't stop reading through all their archives? It's happened to me before, and, yes, it has happened to me again. Today, my heart went all a flutter when I stumbled upon Smosch. Sandra likes drawing, crotching, taking photos and drinking tea. She is in Berlin right now, yahoo! And she even has a cool secret blog, Smoschmobile, where she posts photos from her camera phone, including the one above from a Berlin gallery. Sigh. Isn't she fabulous?

Back from Berlin!

Posted on 10:33 by gaurav kumar
Hello, dear readers! Alex and I are back from Berlin. The city was amazing -- achingly hip, creative, friendly and forward-thinking. We biked everywhere; each street has a bike lane and the drivers are so respectful, nothing like New York cabbies. Did you know that Berlin is the greenest city in Europe? Over 30% of the city is covered in parks, lakes, trees or waterways. The museums were also fascinating--including the new DDR museum about what life was like behind the Berlin wall.

Shockingly, the food was better than Paris. A bold statement, but true -- eclectic, well designed restaurants serving inexpensive, seasonal food. We loved German dumplings, which are like Italian gnudi. We also spent one night at an old German dancehall, where people were swing dancing in 40s dresses with wavy pinned-back hair; suspenders and hats for the guys. Alex was so taken by the awesome older men that now he can't wait to get grey hair. We are both now officially obsessed and would recommend the city to any wanderlusting readers! (See more photos here if you'd like....)

Going traveling: Berlin

Posted on 14:00 by gaurav kumar
Today, at long last, Alex and I are off to Berlin! Thank you to everyone for the great tips on cool places to eat, things to do and sights to see. Can't wait to hit the streets and hang out with dudes like these....

House swap

Posted on 05:30 by gaurav kumar
I've always loved to travel, but I have a limited income. So I was thrilled this year to discovered the genius of housing swaps. In Paris, my mom and I swapped apartments for a pretty apartment in the fourteenth. For our Berlin trip, Alex and I are swapping with the lovely apartment pictured here. (Check it out!!!)

Some friends say they'd be nervous about people messing up their stuff, but I feel like you can get a good sense of people through their emails. Now when we travel, I feel like more of an insider in the foreign city. Plus, we can spend the money we saved on fabulous dinners, museum tickets and boutique shopping. I would highly recommend it...

Babies on the brain.

Posted on 05:24 by gaurav kumar
I think my biological clock just started ticking. Seriously. I'm 28 years old, and I have suddenly and inexplicably starting fantasizing, obsessing and even dreaming about babies.

I've started reading memoirs about nannies and motherhood and blogs written by moms. Every baby I pass on the street is cuter than the last; I coo and wave into their strollers. I think about babies all the time, as well as baby names: Oliver, Sasha, Sophie, Zoe (with an umlaut).

Has this happened to any of you?!

Vogue Girl Korea!

Psst, The Little Things

Posted on 04:02 by gaurav kumar
Are you ever irrationally attracted to random things? For some reason, I love when Alex has messy wet hair, like when he gets out of the shower or a pool. It smells nice and feels cold when I kiss him on his head! I also love when he wears nylon windbreakers, smells like laundry detergent, kisses me on the forehead and smiles enough to show his dimples. (Oooh, cute!) What do you find yourself attracted to?

I miss Paris.

Posted on 05:15 by gaurav kumar
Ahh, I miss Paris. I had an epically stressful day yesterday and would love to hop on a flight and spend the week walking through the Luxembourg Gardens and through the Rodin, Louvre and Picasso museums.

Parisian Shopping

Posted on 05:22 by gaurav kumar
Parisian women really do have amazing style. My mom and I spotted a few widespread trends when we were there last week:
* neutral, solid colors
* pretty flats, especially ballet flats (they were everywhere!)
* dudes on rollerblades
* older women with amazing sexuality (In Paris, you get hotter with age)

I was trying to stave off temptation but couldn't help splurging on a fall jacket from Maje, my favorite designer who is hard to find in the U.S. See her gorgeous fall/winter collection here.

The lingerie store Princesse Tam Tam is also fun. I'm not sure how high quality their stuff is -- If I were a big snob, I might say the lace should be softer -- but they have flirty lingerie that still feels romantic, if you want to bring home a treat for your honey....

Posted on 12:08 by gaurav kumar
Congrats to our baby bene! We just found out that we are finalists for a Folio: Ozzie & Eddie Magazine Award. We're up for Best Travel Issue, along with Budget Travel (which I love; their editor is awesome and good natured) and National Geographic. Little bene, you are growing up so nice and strong!
