Cookies

Posted on 06:29 by gaurav kumar
Alex and I were watching The Great Escape yesterday when, about half way through, we both got a craving for cookies. But neither of us wanted to leave the cozy apartment. Suddenly, I remembered this awesome cookie delivery service! Thirty minutes later, we were sitting on my bed, watching Steve McQueen ride his motorcycle and munching warm peanut butter and chocolate chip cookies. It was one of those I-heart-New-York moments.

Hear Ye, Hear Ye: The Yuppie List

Posted on 05:20 by gaurav kumar
Now that I've been dating Alex, we've been spending Friday nights in Park Slope eating stinky cheeses and drinking acidic white wines and just generally acting like yuppies.

Remember last year's yuppie list? With great embarrassment, I think it is time to bring it back.

For example: Last Friday, we were chatting about foods we hated as kids. Alex mused, "When I was growing up, I never liked green beans. But I like them now...you know, haricot verts...."

Yes. Stay tuned for more...

Shake it up, baby

Posted on 05:40 by gaurav kumar
My new brother-in-law Paul gave me these amazing salt and pepper shakers last Christmas. They rock back and forth but never tip over! Only a brain surgeon could find something that awesome.

My, what beautiful wine you have...

Posted on 05:44 by gaurav kumar
We've long been drawn to well designed wine bottles here on Cup of Jo. But the other night at Little Giant, I was blown away by the label of the wine they were pouring by the glass -- Mano a Mano from Spain. So graphic and striking! It added a really nice touch to the evening. Here are a few other beauties...

Our new friend Keith

Guess who just subscribed to bene? Keith McNally!!! He, of course, is the legendary restaurateur behind Balthazar, Pastis, Lucky Strike, Schillers and the new Morandi. What a thrill!

Get a fork

Posted on 05:18 by gaurav kumar
This week's New York Mag has a story about the calories (lots) in a typical lunch at Per Se. It's a funny piece--but, seriously, getting a little fatter seems a small price to pay for a nine-course tasting menu by Thomas Keller. Yummers!

Oops, Your Table's Naked

Posted on 05:09 by gaurav kumar
I'm a big fan of the rustic wooden table, but sometimes a pretty tablecloth can really dress up a dinner party. Since tablecloths--even boring ones--are pretty expensive, I prefer to buy pieces of fabric. You just go to a fabric store, choose your favorite from a huge selection, have them cut a few yards and voila! My go-to store is Purl Patchwork in Soho. Happy shopping!

Drink Me

Posted on 05:29 by gaurav kumar

So if you haven't read the hilariously clever Alice in Wonderland in a while, I'd highly recommend revisiting. Such great riddles and wordplay. In the meantime, check out these mugs and glasses. It would be fun to drink from them every morning -- you never know what would happen!

Bird carafes

Posted on 20:52 by gaurav kumar
Now, dear readers, we've reached the end of falling/flying week. I leave you with the cute set of blown-glass carafes shaped like mother and baby birds (sent to me, fittingly, by my mother). It might be sweet to bring them out with red wine (mama) and white wine (baby). By Italian design company Dovetusai.

Wine Labels

Posted on 15:35 by gaurav kumar
When I came down to visit my mom and her husband, I brought this bottle of wine. I brought it partly because my mom likes Chardonnay, partly because the store owner swore it wasn't woody or buttery, and partly because the label is so pretty. (Don't you think?)

We loved. I'd recommend.

(P.S. I bought it at Winesby.com, a tiny West Village shop that delivers wine around Manhattan. The owner Jeff Hock is warm and knowledgeable and stocks 80+ well-curated bottles. Lots of good wine, lots of nice labels!)

Wait...am I in a reality show?

Posted on 05:06 by gaurav kumar
Last week, I went to a great press dinner at an apartment in Nolita. We were about to sit down for the first course when in walked Gail, judge of Top Chef! I was super psyched. She honed in on the food during the meal. Meanwhile, I snapped this paparazzi shot of her when I went to the bathroom. (She's the third woman on the right, above)

Then, this week, we went to a magazine party at MoMA and saw our man Tim Gunn, mentor on Project Runway. I lurve him, and after drinking four glasses of Champagne on an empty stomach, took this shot of him watching me take this shot.

Then Lina, our boss Geri, her boyfriend David and I took a wobbly, giggly tour of the exhibitions.

Cat Party
